Rockville Navigation: damage to bridge

Postby bjg » Mon Jul 26, 2010 10:36 am

For some time my website has had a piece about the Rockville Navigation in Co Roscommon (see http://irishwaterwayshistory.com/abandoned-or-little-used-irish-waterways/the-rockville-navigation/). I revisited the navigation recently, and an account of a trip downriver to Grange will be added to my piece shortly. However, I was horrified to find that the bridge, which bears a plaque with the date June 1765, has been severely damaged, with chunks of masonry in the canal below.

I have reported this to the Co Roscommon heritage officer, but is there anyone else to whom I should report the matter? Is there anything I can do to get the bridge repaired properly? There can't be that many dated bridges in Co Roscommon.

For anyone interested in the Rockville Navigation, here http://wp.me/Ppxzo-Yv is an account of a small-boat trip from the bridge down to Grange on the Carnadoe Waters.
